Walk-in industry lead times and new programs available

Supply chain issues and labor shortages have increased lead times for foodservice equipment such as walk-in cold storage. Learn how certain industry leaders are providing quicker solutions

If the pandemic has taught us anything in the foodservice equipment industry, it’s that cold storage is more and more necessary. Many industries from restaurants to retail shops are struggling with labor and product shortages. The foodservice and cold storage equipment manufacturers are no different. Since 2018, industries have experienced an average increase ranging from 7.40% to 101.9% pursuant to the Producer Price Index published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics which has directly affected the cost of materials used to produce walk-in products. In addition, the cost of labor since October 2018 has risen by 14.36% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Polar King prepared itself during the beginning of the pandemic by increasing its stock of refrigeration and manufacturing materials. This, along with the need for cold storage, quickly led to the creation of a new program. The Polar King Quick Build Program provides faster lead times on the most common sizes of built-to-order walk-in coolers, freezers, and combination units.

A quality cooler

In a publication interview, Nick Pearl, owner, and franchisee of three Salvatore’s Old-Fashioned Pizzeria restaurants in the upstate New York region detailed his decision to move from used coolers and freezers to a brand-new, custom-built Polar King unit. “This time around, traditional boxes were out of stock, late, and quite frankly, almost the same price as the Polar King. So, I decided to spend the little extra and get the boxes that I knew were going to outlast me,” he says. “I’m thrilled to have this quality of a cooler.”

Nick Pearl knows that Polar King means quality. “They’re the best in the business,” he says. “There is no better unit for outdoor walk-in coolers.” He also likes the fact that Polar King coolers and freezers can withstand the tough New York winters, so they don’t take up valuable internal square footage.

For 40 years, Polar King has provided thousands of walk-ins to single-unit operators, chain restaurants, schools, health care facilities, government agencies, and many other industries requiring dependable outdoor walk-in refrigeration. Constructed with a seamless fiberglass design, quick build walk-ins are made to order which allows for customization on some aspects of the unit. Customers can choose the unit type (cooler, freezer, or combination unit), walk-in size, floor load rating, and door width. Estimated quick build lead times are about 6-8 weeks.

Polar King also offers a Quick Ship service. This convenient quick ship service can accommodate the demand for expedited delivery of walk-in coolers, freezers, dry storage units, and special-purpose units. This service is intended to provide customers with quick delivery and straightforward answers to their refrigeration needs. Quick Ship units typically ship within approximately 2-3 weeks.
