The future of foodservice design education

How you can help shape the future of foodservice design education: a call for editorial contributors

We’re excited to announce that the FCSI Educational Foundation (FCSI EF) is developing a comprehensive new textbook, not only to support students participating in the Foodservice Consulting Certificate Program at Western Kentucky University (WKU), but also to serve as a trusted training resource for design consultancy firms across North America, and beyond.

This book is set to become the definitive guide for design consultants, and the FCSI EF encourages the expertise and insight of FCSI TAD Professional members to help shape its content.

FCSI EF is therefore inviting contributions, ideas, and insights from FCSI Professional member consultants. Whether it’s to tells us a simple outline of the design principles you live by, or to submit a full compelling design-led case-study/project you have worked on, we encourage you to share the essential knowledge every new and young consultant should know. Your expertise is key to ensuring this book is both educational, practical, and useful.

The book will cover key topics including, but not limited to:

  • The different types of consultants
  • Consultant career paths
  • The role of the consultant in a project team
  • Project organization charts
  • Understanding your client
  • Foodservice sanitation
  • Materials and finishes for interior design
  • Digital rendering for interiors
  • Commercial food preparation
  • Foodservice design
  • Menu planning and purchasing
  • A comprehensive foodservice equipment guide
  • Industry innovation and the future of foodservice

Talent and knowledge

As Kathleen Held, president of the FCSI Educational Foundation, explains: “This initiative is about more than just education. It’s about showcasing the talent and depth of knowledge within FCSI, supporting the next generation of consultants, and creating an educational resource that defines best practice in foodservice design.”

This is your opportunity to contribute to this publication and additional supporting digital assets.

If you are interested in contributing content or ideas, please email to Foodservice Consultant magazine’s Michael Jones before July 1, 2025. We’ll follow up with more details on how to participate.

Thank you for helping shape the future of foodservice consulting.
