FCSI EAME 2018 Conference: things to do (and eat) in Rotterdam

Make the most of the city of Rotterdam while visiting for the FCSI EAME 2018 Conference. Tina Nielsen recommends exploring the culinary and cultural delights the city has to offer

Three cultural experiences

Kijk-Kubus

A must for any visitor to Rotterdam and a prime example of the unusual and intreresting architecture on show in the city. Architect Piet Blom envisaged this development as a village within the city, the cube houses, tipped to one side, representing trees in a forest. They are mostly private homes, but one has been kept as a museum forvisitors to get an insight into living in the houses.

Museum Rotterdam

Learn about the city of Rotterdam, its history, neighbourhoods and people. Chronicling Rotterdam’s journey to the present, the museum is home to more than 40,000 artefacts and visitors will often find specially organised temporary exhibitions focusing on specific people and places.

Kunsthal Rotterdam

This contemporary art institution may have no permanent collection, but with 20 visiting exhibitions this may be one of the most active museums in Europe.

Three foods to try

Bitterballen

These deepfried croquette-like delicacies must qualify as Holland’s best-loved snack. Totally moreish, they are usually made with shredded meat and are the perfect accompaniment to a cold drink. Try the famed version of this snack at Hotel New York.

Patatje Oorlog

Fries served with mayonnaise, satay sauce and a sprinkling of raw onion. Satisfying and delicious, a cone of these hot potatoes is a mainstay of the Rotterdam street food scene. Head to one of the branches of the Bram Ladage (ladage.nl) stall for authentic Dutch fries.

Stroopwafel

A Dutch classic if ever there was one, a stroopwafel is a waffle made up two discs of baked dough, held together with a caramel syrup in the middle. They originated in the city of Gouda in the 19th century, but are ubiquitous across the country. In Rotterdam visit Stroop (strooprotterdam.com) for a taste of this sweet treat.
